Faculty Consultant: Dr. Monroe
Dr. Edna Magpantay-Monroe is an Associate Professor and Vice Chair for Chaminade University of Honolulu School of Nursing. She received her Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) from University of Illinois at Chicago, a Masters of Science (MS) Primary Care Adult Nurse Practitioner from University of Maryland at Baltimore and a Doctoral degree in Education (Ed. D.) with concentration in Educational Leadership from University of Phoenix online. She is licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) and as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in the State of Hawaii. She has been a nurse for 29 years, with formal teaching experience for about 25 years, and has practiced in several areas of nursing including intermediate care, medical/surgical, mental health, community health, home health, utilization management, case management, worker's compensation, call centers, and nursing administration.
Dr. Monroe’s recent accolades includes receiving the 2015 Fr. John Bolin Excellence in Scholarship Faculty Award, 2015 Chaminade University Na Liko Na’auao Outstanding Mentor Award, 2014 Filipino Nurses Organization of Hawaii Nursing Excellence: Nursing Education Award, 2014 Harris Manchester Summer Research Institute Fellow University of Oxford, England and 2013 Chaminade University Reverend David Schuyler Advisor of the Year. She is also published and presented locally, nationally and internationally. Her emerging research in emotional intelligence and coaching students drives her desire to produce adaptable and mindful nurses for the future.
Dr. Monroe is active in her service to students, school and community. She mentors students in enriching their academic and cultural life. She has been the faculty advisor/consultant for HISNA since 2014 when a group of Chaminade students requested her help to rejuvenate the state organization. She was a founding faculty advisor for Chaminade Student Nurses Association (SNA). She is also a co-advisor for Chaminade’s The Filipino Club (TFC). She is currently the President for STTI Gamma Psi at large chapter and treasurer for the Asian American Pacific Islander Nurses Association Hawaii Chapter.

Duties of Faculty Advisor as Stated in HISNA Bylaws:
- Attend board and other official meetings, such as national and state conventions and council of State of School Presidents.
- Serve as resource persons in planning, deliberating, implementing and evaluating HISNA activities.
- Identify resources and provide the guidance needed for decision-making, problem solving, program planning, and fundraising.
- Provide information and guidance in organizational management, financial planning, and record keeping.
- Objectively interpret major health issues and concerns of the nursing profession.
- Provide guidance to the student President and Board of Directors on how to conduct effective meetings (e.g., planning an agenda, recording minutes, archiving documents, bylaws, policies and procedures, and parliamentary procedure).
- Serve as an interpreter of the responsibilities, policies and goals of HISNA, the appointing organization, and other community and professional organizations.
- Stimulate and encourage personal and professional formation and foster the leadership skills required of officers and other members of the HISNA.
- Facilitate discussions leading to decision making by student leaders while refraining from directing the outcome.
- Facilitate the orderly transition of the outgoing and incoming members of the Board of Directors, consultants and advisors.
- Identify implications for both the HISNA and the appointing organization when action or positions are considered.
- Serve as a resource and liaison to administration, faculty, appointing organizations and others as needed.
- Clarify functions, programs, and operations of the appointing organizations.
- Adhere to the education about ethical principles on matters of confidentiality and conflicts of interest; be familiar with the NSNA Code of Ethics.
- Be a sustaining NSNA member (dues of $50 should be payable to NSNA directly).
